Royal Surrey County Hospital Charity has launched an emergency appeal to support frontline staff in the fight against COVID-19.

Staff working at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust based at the Guildford hospital, or out in the community at Haslemere, Cranleigh and Milford hospitals, are under increasing pressure as the pandemic continues to grow and more patients contract the virus, needing vital care.

The NHS hospital charity set up the dedicated fund for staff welfare following a number of enquiries from the local community asking how they could help.

David Smith, Head of Fundraising at Royal Surrey County Hospital Charity, said:

Within the first 24 hours of the appeal going live on our website, we raised an incredible £3,000. We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity that the local community has shown during this challenging time. Thank you to everyone who has donated to the appeal already.

He continued: “Importantly, we also want to say a huge thank you to everyone at the Trust for going above and beyond to care for patients. We are so pleased the community is recognising their commitment and are coming together to help support these vital healthcare workers.

“While the majority of us have been told the best thing we can do to help is to stay home, our amazing staff at Royal Surrey County Hospital, and our hospitals in the community, don't have that choice.

“Every penny and pound really will make a difference to staff who are dedicating their lives to fighting the virus. If you can, please make a donation today so we can be there for these heroes when they need us most.”

Donations to the emergency appeal could fund:

  • Welfare packs for staff – which may include food packages, treats, and comfort packs for those having to stay overnight.
  • Staff travel and accommodation – for those who need to stay close by or isolate from their families so they can keep working.
  • Items that could help staff manage stress during this highly pressurised period.
  • Tablets so that staff and patients can stay connected to family and loved ones at home.
