News Revolutionising prostate cancer treatment at Royal Surrey Thanks to your support, Royal Surrey Charity has helped fund a groundbreaking new piece of technology that is transforming prostate cancer surgery at Royal Surrey Hospital. Along with The Prostate Project, Royal Surrey Charity has funded the purchase of the Histolog Scanner – an innovative device that allows surgeons to assess prostate tissue for cancer during an operation, helping them make immediate decisions while a patient is still in theatre. Royal Surrey is the first NHS trust in the UK to introduce this technology. Traditionally, surgeons have had to wait for laboratory results after surgery to confirm whether all cancerous tissue has been removed. The Histolog Scanner provides this information in real time, allowing surgeons to make adjustments during the procedure if needed. This means patients may be less likely to require additional treatments, such as radiotherapy, following surgery. It also has the potential to improve long-term outcomes and reduce the impact of treatment on patients' quality of life. Wissam Abou-Chedid, Consultant Urological Surgeon at Royal Surrey, said: “This technology marks a real leap forward in prostate cancer surgery. For the first time, we can assess tissue in real time while the patient is still on the operating table, allowing us to make immediate, informed decisions that improve cancer control without putting quality of life at risk. It means fewer patients needing radiotherapy afterwards, and more men retaining their continence and sexual function. It's transformative, and I'm incredibly proud that Royal Surrey is leading the way.” This latest investment is another example of how your donations help Royal Surrey remain at the forefront of healthcare innovation, giving patients access to the very latest technology and treatments close to home.
