Our Special Care Baby Fund supports premature and sick babies, and their families, cared for by our incredible Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) team.

When a baby needs special care, it can be a very difficult time for the family – sometimes a baby’s stay last weeks or even months. By donating to our Special Care Baby Fund, you are making a big difference to poorly babies and their families.

Your donation could help:

  • Fund lifesaving equipment and technology
  • Enhance the experience of our patients by funding comfortable and welcoming spaces
  • Support staff wellbeing so our amazing NHS staff can provide extraordinary care
  • Invest in research, training and education
We will be forever indebted to the staff in the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and will be telling our girls all about their incredible work for years to come.
Hanna, mum of two premature babies, Josie and Clemmie, who were cared for by our SCBU team.

The difference you make

In 2019, we launched our Closer to Care campaign to support the redevelopment of the unit, and we are extremely grateful to everyone who supported this appeal.

Thanks to your donations, we raised over £500,000 towards the £4m redevelopment, and in 2021, the new SCBU at the Royal Surrey opened to patients. The enhanced space allows parents of premature or sick babies to stay overnight, next to their baby’s cot – one of the first in the UK to do so. Studies show this reduces distress for both, and encourages bonding, builds parents' confidence in their ability to care for their baby and helps establish breastfeeding.

Your support has also helped fund:

  • Sibling packs, which contain a toy, a ‘big sister/brother’ certificate and a photo of their new baby sibling.
  • A video messaging service to help reduce separation anxiety for parents of premature or sick babies.
  • Wall decorations
  • Skin to Skin Tops

There’s more we can do, but we need your help.
