News Thank you for making strides for cancer care Royal Surrey Charity’s sponsored walk Stride for Cancer Care took place last weekend, with hundreds of supporters and staff walking together to raise an incredible £70,000 (and counting!) for the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre. Sponsored by Russell Cawberry, the event brought together patients, survivors, families, and Royal Surrey staff – all walking to transform the future of cancer care in Surrey and beyond. Walkers chose from four scenic routes (5km, 10km, 15km and 25km), taking in some of Surrey’s most beautiful countryside. The money raised will help fund state-of-the-art equipment, innovative research, and improvements to the Cancer Centre to ensure patients continue to receive world class care in the best possible environment. One of our supporters and Royal Surrey patient, Jenny (pictured below first on the left), walked the 25km route on Sunday. She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer earlier this year and has received incredible care at Royal Surrey. She said: “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January this year. It was a shock – a curved ball we'd not expected, but every cloud has a silver lining. I have had so much support from my amazing family and friends, and the Royal Surrey has been truly wonderful. All the consultants, doctors and nurses in the breast unit and the cancer centre have been incredibly kind, supportive and encouraging. The appointments and tests all happened as quickly as they could, which confirmed the diagnosis and the extent of the cancer. I'm pleased to say that my treatment is now complete, apart from the ongoing medication (which, while really important, is not my best friend!).” Jenny made strides for cancer care with her husband Dan and has raised over £4,000 for the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre. She was proud to recover her fitness following treatment to enable her to walk the 25km. She told us: “I am very grateful to the team at the Royal Surrey for such an amazing treatment for breast cancer. Now, Dan and I want to do our bit to ensure others get the same experience. It was a wonderful day, a great route and very well organised. My participation in the walk was a small attempt to give back and help others to have great care too. Dan and I hope to walk again next year.” A huge thank you to everyone who participated. Whether you sponsored one of our walkers or volunteered on the day, you are helping to shape the future of cancer care! Sandy Lowry, our Community and Events Fundraising Manager, said: “This year's Stride for Cancer Care has been made even more special as we are delighted to have been able to bring it home to the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre. Starting and finishing our annual sponsored walk at this beautiful newly refurbished facility, which Royal Surrey Charity invested £750,000 into, not only puts our cancer patients and our caring staff at the very heart of this event but also shows the power that our supporters have because they can actually see that their fundraising truly makes a difference. Thank you to everyone who took part this year and we look forward to welcoming even more walkers to Stride for Cancer Care next year!” Thank you to our partners Special thanks to our event partners and supporters who helped make the event possible: Russell Cawberry Ltd.
