News Raising funds for our ‘outstanding’ Maternity Unit On October 26, Sahand laced up his running shoes and completed the Beachy Head 10k challenge, raising vital funds for Royal Surrey Charity's Maternity Care Fund. The date of the challenge held special meaning for him, as it marked the day he last heard his son Sam’s heartbeat before he was born sleeping two weeks before his due date. Sahand told us: “I began 2024 with a goal of improving my health. By August, I had lost three stones and was walking regularly. Then, as Forrest Gump did, ‘for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run.’ Unlike Forrest, I couldn’t even run for a whole minute!” From that modest start, Sahand’s determination grew. He completed the Couch-to-5k programme and decided to challenge himself further by signing up for a 10k run. He went on to say: “When I came across the Beachy Head 10k race on October 26, I just knew I have to take part. I didn't care that I hadn't run for 25+ years, or that my aggressive training plan sees me running a full 10k for the first time on the race day itself! I knew I had to do it! “During my run, I thought of Sam and the precious moments I held him in my arms. I also thought of the incredible support we received from Sands charity and Heather from the Royal Surrey’s Spiritual Care team who arranged the service and funeral. I also thought of the lovely maternity nurses at Royal Surrey, who sat with us, trying to give some comfort. They held our hands and cried with us. Their compassion and care during our darkest moments made all the difference.” Sahand crossed the finished line in 1 hour and 10 minutes, achieving his personal best. Huge well done and thank you so much to Sahand for making strides in memory of Sam and for helping us support so many other families.
