Cancer patients will experience an improved level of comfort, while undergoing treatment at Royal Surrey County Hospital, thanks to the support of Guildford Lions Club.

The volunteer-led group donated £2,000 to Royal Surrey County Hospital Charity, which has allowed us to buy two state-of-the-art chemotherapy chairs for the hospital's oncology ward, Onslow Ward.

Mick Ryan, Guildford Lions President, said: "We were absolutely delighted to be able fund the purchase of the two state-of-the-art chemotherapy chairs for the hospital’s oncology ward, Onslow Ward, at St Luke’s Cancer Centre.

"Guildford Lions Club's sole purpose is to be able to help those in need in our local community so this donation really fits the bill making life a bit easier for patients who are having a tough time and helping them on their road to recovery.

"We would also like to thank the people of Guildford as it is only through their generous support of our various activities that allows us to be able to fund such donations from our club's Welfare Fund."

The chairs, which are padded and recline to provide maximum comfort, will make a real difference to patients undergoing treatment – often for long periods of time.

Sarah Branch, Oncology Matron for St Luke's Cancer Centre at Royal Surrey, said:

The chairs provide great comfort to the patients: rather than sitting on the bed they can have their treatment in a chair and feel comfortable there for some time. It is good to have a range of different chairs in the department so that patients get a good choice. Thank you all for raising this money for the department. It means a lot to make the patients' stay a bit more comfortable.

Analiese Doctrove, Head of Fundraising at the charity, said:

We are extremely thankful for the generous donation from Guildford Lions. The extra comfort the chairs provide will make a real impact, at what can be a very difficult time.
