Royal Surrey County Hospital Charity has launched Superhero Week, which will run next week (from Monday 15 until Sunday 21 October) in recognition of the incredible staff and patients at the hospital.

We're encouraging individuals, schools, businesses and local clubs to take part by dressing up as a superhero on any day during the week, and donating £1 to help transform patients’ lives.

One patient who benefited from exceptional care at Royal Surrey County Hospital is Debbie Bailey, 46, who was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. Debbie found a lump after a friend with breast cancer encouraged her to check.

Despite surgery and recovering from what she describes as ‘brutal treatment’, Debbie and eight friends from university completed The Three Peaks Challenge in June this year. The team raised an astounding £30,000 for the charity, which will support more people with breast cancer being treated at St Luke’s Cancer Centre in Guildford.

She said: “I cannot tell you how incredible the breast cancer team at Royal Surrey were during that time. They have the whole process so finely tuned and they are so brilliant at it. They know how to feed you the information: they’re empathetic as well as sympathetic; they just got it so right.

I felt cocooned in a nest of support and that made me incredibly positive and allowed me not to worry. It’s because of them that I wanted to give something back.”

During the week, we're asking people to celebrate and thank members of hospital staff who have gone above and beyond to care for them by sharing their Royal Surrey Superheroes on social media, using #SuperRoyalSurrey.

Analiese Doctrove, Head of Fundraising at Royal Surrey County Hospital Charity, said: “We come across so many superheroes every day in our work. From our supporters, like Debbie, to our wonderful medical staff – Superhero Week felt like an apt way to recognise these amazing people who do amazing things on a daily basis.

We wanted to make it fun and easy for everyone to take part – just dress as a superhero or wear a superhero T-shirt and make a donation to support local people. If you have a story like Debbie’s and want to share it with us, we’d love to hear from you on social media!

All money raised will go towards transforming healthcare for people in South West Surrey and beyond. From providing medical equipment and redeveloping wards, to investing in staff development and funding innovative research, we fund projects that make the biggest impact on the 260,000 people we treat each year.
