Surrey cake shop donates cakes to support poorly children treated at Royal Surrey

Friday 15 February 2019

A Surrey cake shop helped spread some love this Valentine’s Day, by providing cakes for a bake sale in aid of Royal Surrey County Hospital Charity.

Butter and Cream in Milford has pledged its support by donating cakes for four of our themed bake sales throughout the year, including Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween and Christmas. The Valentine's event raised over £1,300, with the donated cakes from Butter and Cream bringing in a brilliant £545.

All money raised will go towards providing a state-of-the-art high dependency unit for the children’s ward, Hascombe. The unit will mean children who need more intensive observation and care than on a general ward – but not to the point of intensive care – can be treated at the hospital, rather than having to travel to hospitals in London.

Owner Suke Wibaut, 63 from Hindhead – who also runs Eliza’s café at Secrett’s of Milford – chose to support the charity after a recent visit to the hospital with bad stomach pains. She said:

I was really impressed by the whole experience and the level of care I received. However, it was during my time there it really struck me how stretched the NHS is and how many people in our community the hospital supports – I was in a room with three other ladies, who are all customers of my cake shop! When I returned home, I wanted to do something to help and making cakes seemed like an obvious way to support. We will be donating 100% of sales from the charity cake sales and I’m so pleased it will help poorly children.

Suke’s husband Tom, 60, was also a patient at St Luke’s Cancer Centre at the Royal Surrey in 2017, when he was successfully treated for bowel cancer.

Analiese Doctrove, Head of Fundraising at Royal Surrey County Hospital Charity, said:

We are so grateful to Butter and Cream, and all individuals who bake cakes for our hospital cake sales. It’s such a generous way to support patients at the hospital – and the cakes are delicious too!
