The Big Lottery Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How does the lottery work?

Expand

Draws take place every Saturday. Tickets cost £1 per entry, and players can purchase up to 10 entries per week.

Each ticket is allocated a unique Game Number and entered into the weekly draw. Every week, 13 winning entries are selected at random using a Random Number Generator (RNG). Each eligible entry has an equal chance of being selected.

In addition, eligible Direct Debit players are automatically entered into four seasonal superdraws each year, with the chance to win prizes of up to £2,000.

What are the odds?

Expand

The odds of winning depend on the total number of eligible entries in each draw.

Each week, 13 winning entries are selected at random from all eligible entries. Every eligible entry has an equal chance of winning.

For example, if there are 10,000 entries in a draw, the chance of a single entry winning a prize would be approximately 13 in 10,000 (around 1 in 769).

How are the winning numbers chosen?

Expand

All eligible entries are assigned a unique Game Number.

A Random Number Generator (RNG) is used to select 13 winning entries at random from all eligible entries in the draw. The first winning entry receives the top prize, followed by the remaining prizes in accordance with the published prize structure.

The process is entirely random, and every eligible entry has an equal chance of being selected.

Expand

Unfortunately we can’t Gift Aid lottery payments as by law your entry fee into a lottery draw is classed as a purchase rather than a charitable gift. As there will hopefully be something you receive in return i.e. a lottery win, it is not considered eligible for Gift Aid. However rest assured that your lottery entry will still go towards supporting your hospital charity.
