Royal Surrey’s Cardiology Team is embracing innovative technology to help patients monitor their heart health from the comfort of their homes – thanks to your support.

The team has introduced a new portable heart-monitoring device, the Alivecor KardiaMobile, which allows patients to record an electrocardiogram (ECG) whenever they experience symptoms such as fluttering, skipped beats or palpitations.

By simply placing two fingers from each hand on the device’s sensor pads, patients can capture a quick and accurate reading of their heart’s activity. The results are then sent instantly via a smartphone app to the hospital’s Cardiology Team for review.

This allows for earlier detection of conditions such as Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and Super Ventricular Tachycardia (SVT), speeds up diagnosis, and helps reduce pressure on hospital clinics by allowing patients to be monitored accurately while at home.
Patients use the device over a two-week period to record any symptoms they experience, with the data automatically sent to patient’s cardiologist.

Nicola Montalbano, Senior Chief Cardiac Physiologist and Head of Cardiac Physiology, said:

“Previously, patients monitored for arrhythmias would have been asked to wear sensors attached to their chests, or have recorders implanted under the skin to track their heart’s electrical activity. So we are really pleased to have the new devices, which are not intrusive for the patients at all but still transmit data quickly and accurately.

“The use of this device also frees up clinic time and gives reassurance for patients when they’re worried about heart irregularities.”

Nicola and Khelvin Jockson, Cardiology Advanced Nurse Practitioner, who applied for the funding for the KardiaMobile project, expressed their gratitude for the charity’s support:

“We’re really grateful to Royal Surrey Charity and to patients and relatives who have contributed to the Cardiac Care Fund and made it possible for us to acquire 23 of the new devices. There are only a few NHS trusts in the country currently using this device with patients, so we’ve definitely got our fingers on the pulse!”

Thanks to your generous donations to our Cardiac Care Fund, Royal Surrey is now among the few NHS trusts in the UK using this cutting-edge technology – helping patients get the care they need sooner, and with greater comfort and confidence.
