West Surrey Golf Club has achieved a truly remarkable fundraising milestone, raising more than £109,000 for Royal Surrey Charity’s Cancer and Surgical Innovation Campaign. As the Club’s Charity of the Year, members came together and took part in various fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for the Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre at the Royal Surrey, as it nears completion.

Captains of the club, Jenny Blake Thomas and Gary Chalcraft, said: “We felt it was important to choose a cause that benefits everyone.”

Gary added, “I never imagined we’d be able to raise such an incredible amount. It’s been moving to see how many club members have been touched by cancer and wanted to help. We’re both extremely grateful and proud of what the club has accomplished together.”

During their tenure, Jenny and Gary organised different fundraising activities ranging from the flagship Pro Am tournament to themed evenings like Viva Italia, as well as raffles, bridge afternoons, and more.

The funds raised were match-funded by a generous donor who wishes to stay anonymous, bringing the total amount beyond initial hopes.

Sir Jeremy Hunt MP, who has been actively supporting this appeal from the start and attended the cheque presentation, said: “This is an extraordinary moment – raising more money than anyone imagined. It just shows how the Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre has really caught the imagination of the whole community. The thought of having this amazing centre that will treat 7,000 more people each year has inspired everyone. Massive thanks to all those at the golf club who contributed.”

Royal Surrey is a regional centre for cancer services supporting a population of over 3 million (around 4.5% of the UK’s population). 60% of surgical procedures carried out at Royal Surrey are cancer-related. The funds raised will help fund equipment such as robotic beds and high-tech robotics, which will reduce waiting times, leading to better outcomes. Patient experience will also be improved with all the care needed taking place in one highly specialised setting.

On behalf of the Royal Surrey Charity, a huge thank you to the West Surrey Golf Club members and captains, Jenny Blake Thomas and Gary Chalcraft, for their amazing fundraising efforts throughout the year.
