The Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Service at the Royal Surrey Hospital provides a holistic approach to cancer care for patients aged 16-30.

Learning that you have cancer at a young age is incredibly difficult and the unit is designed to support young people and their families through such a diagnosis and beyond.

The team on the TYAC unit are by your side from day one. They will help you to understand your diagnosis and what it means; they will talk you through your treatment plan; they will be the friendly face greeting you when you arrive for treatment; and they will hold your hand when you need it.

The TYAC unit offers more than medical treatment. The ward itself is usually calm and quiet, where the nurses can dedicate time to getting to know patients and families. Counselling is also provided by experienced therapists, who work to help young people adjust to their situation.

A cancer diagnosis induces a lot of stress and anxiety, where side effects from the cancer, or from treatment, can cause great fear among patients. The clinical nurse specialists provide personalised communication which can be incredibly reassuring and having a nurse on the end of a phone alleviates many anxieties.

When on the unit for treatment, small comforts like a hot cup of tea and a snack, a game of scrabble or a comfy, private room can make a real difference on a daunting day.

So much of what the team on the TYAC unit does is to promote LIVING. They organise social events, days out and group sessions, facilitating peer support and creating joyful memories.

I am so grateful for the care that I have received, and will continue to receive, on the TYAC unit. Any money you can donate will allow this amazing team to continue their vital work with young cancer patients and transform their lives. Fionnuala Quinlan-Bennett
