I am attempting the 3 peaks in 24 hours challenge to raise funds for the Intensive Care Unit. The 24-hour time includes both walking time and travel between the mountains — approximately thirteen hours hillwalking and eleven hours driving. The total walking distance is 23 miles (37km) and the total ascent is 3064 metres (10,052ft) - twice the ascent of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, over a similar total walking distance. The total driving distance is 462 miles. Wish me luck!

So a little bit about WHY i'm doing this....

Our whole family tested positive for Covid-19 on Christmas Day 2020. Mark and our 7 month old baby were particularly sick, whilst our eldest child (2 years old) and I had flu-like symptoms. The next week was difficult with Mark mostly sleeping and complaining that he felt very uncomfortable breathing. This took a turn in the early hours of 2 January 2021, when Mark said he felt like he was breathing through a straw and we called an ambulance. They came and said his oxygen was low and he needed to be admitted. The next week Mark had not improved and he was placed into an induced coma. The hospital told me that it was very possible that Mark would not wake up again and that I needed to prepare myself for the worst. Over the next 9 weeks i saw the conditions that the wonderful staff were working in but they were never too busy to support me and prepare me for the potential outcomes. I had 5 end of life visits in total and it was a rollercoaster to say the least!

I can never repay the wonderful team in ICU for their support, professionalism and everything they had to deal with during the pandemic and how hard they worked to get Mark home to his family. He gets to see his sons grow up and that is down to their tireless efforts. Millie Bushill
