Royal Surrey County Hospital Charity is thanking Guildford-based theatre production company, Sunflower Productions, after it raised an incredible £18,120 to support patients at Royal Surrey.

The production company’s full musical version of The Full Monty saw a cast of 25 and an 11-piece orchestra take part in five performances at the Electric Theatre in February. The close-to-sold-out shows had almost 1,000 audience members attend the charity productions.

All money raised from the show will support our urology department, which is internationally renowned for the treatment of prostate and bladder cancer, specialising in prostate brachytherapy and robotic surgery.

Stephen Langley, Professor and Clinical Director of Urology at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, said:

We are planning to use this donation to help fund the equipment needed for a new steam treatment for men with benign prostate problems. Under an anaesthetic, a jet of steam is used to treat the benignly enlarged parts of the prostate gland.
“This fantastic donation to our Urology Department will greatly improve the care we can give to men with prostate problems – we are extremely grateful to all involved in The Full Monty for making this possible.

Co-producer Dave Sillett has a personal reason for supporting the centre after he was treated for prostate cancer at the hospital back in 2018. He said:

I was the first person to be treated in the state-of-the-art Stokes Centre for Urology when it opened, and so on a personal level, this felt like the right cause.
“We’ve previously supported blood cancer charities through a production of Calendar Girls and this time we wanted to raise money to support the hospital charity. The Full Monty seemed like a great fit for all proceeds to go to the urology department.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the amount raised and would like to thank everyone who was involved in making this possible. We’re already thinking about our next charity project – watch this space!

Sandy Lowry, Events Fundraising Manager at Royal Surrey County Hospital Charity, said: “It has been a pleasure to work with and support Sunflower Productions. We are so grateful to everyone for their hard work and dedication throughout this incredible project – not only have the amazing cast and crew put on the show, they have also organised fundraising events in the lead up to the production to cover costs, so that as much money as possible from the performances could come to the charity.

“It was a brilliant show and we would like to thank everyone who attended; we are so grateful to receive such a wonderful response and support from the local community.”
